Bernal Baca,

Dr. Bernal Baca has been employed as the AFT Washington Lobbyist since 2009. When he isn't working in Olympia at the State Legislature, he is assisting with our political and legislative program.

Prior to coming to AFT Washington, he was an executive board member and the local union president of AFT Yakima faculty. Bernal has been an AFT member for over 30 years.


Elizabeth Ferrell-Gray

Elizabeth Ferrell-Gray has worked for AFT Washington since 2007, working for both AFT Washington and the Washington Early Educators In Learning (WEEL), an AFT organizing project, as an administrative assistant. She currently is the office manager and bookkeeper for AFT Washington.

Previously Elizabeth was employed by the Operating Engineers International Union Local 701, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 46, and the Clark County Assessor’s office. She is a member of the Office and Professional Employees Union Local 8.


Nancy Kennedy,

Nancy Kennedy is a Labor Relations Specialist with AFT Washington. She has over 30 years of experience providing assistance to affiliated local unions such as contract bargaining, grievance handling, etc. She is also a trainer on union leadership.


Merrilee Miron,

Merrilee Miron has worked for AFT Washington since 2001 helping local affiliates with grievance and contract administration. Merrilee has put together training workshops for locals and help set up labor/management forums to resolve issues. She is a trainer on union leadership.

Before coming to AFT Washington, Merrilee worked for the Renton School District from 1977-2001 as a school bus driver. She was very involved in UCWU Local 4795 since its inception as a building rep, shop steward as well as serving two terms as its president. Merrilee has an AA degree from Highline Community College.


Sylvia Watson,
Communications Coordinator

Sylvia Watson has worked for AFT Washington since 2004 where she quickly was acclimated to labor unions because there had not been a designated communications position for the organization. Sylvia is responsible for overseeing the AFT Washington website, social media sites, writing and producing a member newsletter, working with the media, and other communications. Sylvia also staffs the Classified Council.

Sylvia has over 25 years in the field of communications and outreach. Prior to working with AFT Washington, she worked as a Communications Specialist for the Economic Opportunity Institute and as a Public Information Officer for the City of Seattle Human Services Department.


Christine Landon

Christine Landon was employed by AFT Washington in several temporary positions beginning in 1999 before joining the staff at the end of 2009. She presently serves as Data Manager, providing the member information essential to staff outreach and the training and support needed by locals in keeping their membership records up-to-date.

Christine taught Ethnic Studies as an adjunct at North Seattle and Shoreline colleges from 1995-2006, serving on both the Seattle and Shoreline locals' executive boards as a vice-president. A K-12 teacher and administrator from 1980 to 1994, she's served tribal and public school systems in Washington and Oregon. An author and community activist, she served on the Martin Luther King, Jr. County Civil Rights Commission, including two terms as Chair, and has recieved several professional and community awards, including a 2006 Distinguished Citizen Award for Human Rights from the City of Seattle for her part in helping the King County Jail system to improve its policies and practices in the treatment of transgender inmates.
