2017 Convention Packet

Our biennial Convention will be held May 19 and 20 (Friday and Saturday) at the Silver Reef Casino and Spa in Ferndale, Washington. The venue is located on the tribal land of the Lhaq'temish, The Lummi People, the original inhabitants of Washington's northernmost coast and southern British Columbia.

The hotel has a spa, swimming pool, fitness room, and a casino, including a non-smoking casino area, and several restaurants. You can visit their website at

This year's Convention features an early bird workshop, "Labor in the Time of Trump: Turning Fear and Apathy into Action," at 2 PM, Friday, May 19. The no-host reception starts at 5:30 PM followed by dinner. Our featured speaker is Kent Wong, Director of the Center for Labor Research and Education at UCLA. After the dinner program, we will host a hospitality reception. On Saturday we will hold breakfast caucuses on Human Rights, Political Action, Contingent Faculty Issues, Professional Staff, and Corrections Faculty. Jeff Johnson, President of the Washington State Labor Council, will be our guest speaker at lunch. After the convention concludes, we are planning a solidarity action at the Peace Arch.

The deadline for registering delegates is April 29 (must be postmarked by April 29th).

Access delegate information here (except for the yellow and green credentials sent to local presidents).

Labor in the Time of Trump

The 2017’s biennial convention comes at a crucial time for us, as a union and as citizens. There has been unprecedented participation at every level of government, and it’s time we had a difficult conversation. How does one turn fear, apathy, and resignation into action? Chances are you’ve met or are one of the many in this country and this union that are still worried about reprisals or simply believe that the only way out is with a can of gasoline and a match. While I sympathize (who hasn’t been there?), there is another option: collective action. The very thing that gives union their power. Enter this year’s convention, and an early bird session.

Officers To Be Elected at This Year's Convention

As you know, our biennial convention will take place in May, and we will be electing officers during that time.

Nominations for officers made by petition from locals must be sent to the attention of the AFT Washington Nominations and Elections Committee at the AFT Washington office no later than Saturday, April 29. The committee accepts nominations for the offices of the president, secretary, treasurer, and the vice presidents and ensures they meet the requirements. Those meeting requirements will be sent in delegate packets.
