State Board "town hall" meetings on Gates Foundation Grant

The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges is hosting online "town hall" meetings to provide information and get feedback on the technology grant from the Gates Foundation to revise at least 80 core classes so that they can be offered on line in one curricular format

All "town hall" meetings will be online in Elluminate, will be recorded, and everyone (faculty, staff, students) is invited. No need to register – just show up!

  • Wednesday, November 4 from 3:00 – 4:30 pm
  • Monday, November 9 from 10:00 – 11:30 am
  • Tuesday, November 17 from 1:00 – 2:30 pm
  • Friday, December 4 from 2:00 – 3:30 pm

Meeting Agenda:
  1. Learn what this project is about and why it is important to the future of higher education.
  2. Discuss any concerns and share your ideas on how to make this project better.
  3. Review and revise: project timeline, list of 81 courses, the draft grant application and participant selection criteria.
  4. Consider whether or not you want to be part of this project… and ask clarifying questions.

As part of an ongoing evaluation, the labor community -- including AFT Washington -- has revised its candidate endorsement process through its COPE program. Our goal is to ensure that we are endorsing candidates for office who strongly support education and working-family issues. To that end, we have developed an endorsement matrix through which to rate candidates. One is for incumbents who are running for their position again and the other is for challengers.

AFT Washington is interested in getting your feedback. You can download the draft endorsement matrixes by clicking on the title above to get to the web page where they are located.

Now is the time to act for health-care reform!

The AFT and AFT Washington strongly support healthcare reform that will guarantee high-quality, affordable healthcare for all. The U.S. House of Representatives'  bill addresses these needs. H.R. 3200, will provide:

Stability....You can't be denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions or your age.

Choices....You can stay with your doctor or choose another one; and choose to keep your curret health insurance or switch to another one.

Lower Costs....A government public option will help force private insurers to remain competitive and keep costs low.

Please contact your senators and representative about reforming health care. Rising healthcare costs strain family budgets, burden businesses, and squeeze state and federal budgets.
