Another great turnout at Conference for Classified Members
A record 88 classified members attended this year’s professional development conference on Saturday, March 14, 2015 in Tacoma. The theme was "Fighting Forward, Making a Difference Every Day."
Workshops were held on anger and conflict management, early brain development and the impact of trauma, how to distinguish gripes from grievances, responding to challenging behaviors in at-risk youth, and working with children who have autism.
Thank you to expert presenters Travis Hall (Renton Academy), Lee Williams (Bates Technical College), Nancy Kennedy (AFT Washington), Linda Tyler-Murray (Merit trainer), and Nancy Grimes (Federal Way School District Special Needs).
Tacoma Public Schools contributed $1,000, which covered the continental breakfast and the cost of two instructors.
Once again we had door prizes, thanks to the hard work of Janet Watson’s (AFT Renton Classified Local 6367) fundraising efforts. AFT Renton Classified and the Tacoma Federation of ParaEducators Local 461 donated gift certificates. Besides these locals, 14 businesses donated door prizes — a record number! Michelle from TFP won the grand prize: a 32” flat screen multi-media television donated by Sunrise Dental for the second year in a row.
We appreciate everyone who helped plan this year’s conference: Todd Hahn and Janet Watson (AFT Renton), Barb Randall-Saleh, Diane Holstrom, Debbie Scott, Maria Haynes, and Janet Morgan (TFP); Merrilee Miron, Cris Rice, and Sylvia Watson (AFT Washington staff).
Feedback from participants was excellent overall, and an educational, fun time was had by all!
