Retirees

Here is a guide of some common terms and concepts that you will read or hear in discussions around health care reform prepared by Susan Levy, Vice President for the AFT Washington Retiree Chapter.

Free Online Tool Helps With Questions on Medicare Benefits and Options
Open Enrollment for Medicare part D has started and will continue through December 31, 2009.

Now is the time to find out if your drug coverage has changed, the cost has gone up, and if you should change your plan.

Medicare Interactive, a FREE online quick-reference tool, puts easy-to-understand answers about Medicare benefits and options right at your fingertips. Medicare Interactive features details about which services are covered by Medicare, how Medicare works with other types of insurance, what to do in the prescription drug coverage gap, and much more.

The "Medicare Interactive Counselor" is made available to members by the AFT and the AFT-affiliated New York State United Teachers. Medicare Interactive is a resource provided by the Medicare Rights Center, the largest independent source of health care information and assistance in the U.S. for people with Medicare.

To use, enter your phrase, key word, or question in the "MI Counselor."

If you’ve followed the health-care-reform debate even just a little, you know that there are many “myths” about reform, probably the most remarkable of which has been the one advanced most prominently by Senator Grassley last summer about euthanizing Grandma. FACT: Health care reform has nothing to do with euthanizing anyone! AFT has the names of 235,000 AFT retirees and there are 100 state and local retiree chapters throughout the country. Because AFT Washington shares the national commitment to retirees, it has encouraged the formation of the AFT WA retiree chapter, chartered in 2003. However, there are only about 220 known names of Washington state retirees. This doesn't seem to reflect the number of probable retirees from all 30 locals. So, how many might be out there?

Membership in the AFT Washington Retiree Chapter is open to any retired member of AFT Washington (formerly WFT) whether employment was full-time or part-time, and to any retired member of the American Federation of Teachers from any local outside of the state of Washington who now resides in this state.
The AFT Washington Retiree Chapter Executive Board consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and five at-large Directors.
