State Board Votes to Declare a Financial Emergency to
Expedite Faculty Dismissals at Community and Technical Colleges

In a controversial vote, the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) today declared a financial emergency over the protest of faculty leaders throughout the state. A law created in 1981, RCW 28B.50.873, allows presidents at community and technical colleges to expedite the termination of full-time, tenure-track and tenured faculty and modifies some reduction-in-force processes outlined in collective bargaining agreements. This law does not apply to four-year colleges and universities. [more]

Shortchanges Students, the Unemployed, and State's Economic Future

"The House's proposed budget today dealt a devastating blow to higher education in our state, and thousands of students will not be able to access higher education,” said Sandra Schroeder, union President of the American Federation of Teachers in Washington State.

Rep. Kathy Haigh, one of the budget writers, said at today's press conference, "This budget gives the biggest hit to the higher education system." [more]

Speaking at the National Press Club on Nov. 17, AFT president Randi Weingarten outlined both provocative and proven approaches to improve public education and thereby make a long-term investment in the country's lagging economy.

[1/19/07] College faculty unions are making the case this year that offering higher pay to part-time instructors and adding full-time positions could improve graduation rates and student learning. (more)
Governor Gregoire released her $30 million proposed 2005-07 budget on Tuesday, Dec. 19, and education is one of the key areas she has invested in.

In 1998 I watched through one-way glass while a focus group discussed part-time faculty members in Washington State's community colleges. Our organization, the American Federation of Teachers, was probing to see if we could garner public support for a campaign directed at the state legislature to improve the salaries and benefits of part-time faculty members and to provide more full-time positions in Washington's community colleges.
